Centre Furnace: The birthplace of the county’s iron industry and Penn State. The men and women who settled Centre Furnace Village in 1791 could never have imagined the long-term consequences of their work. This is their story. The book began as Dr. Stevens’ thesis in 1922, and was expanded by historian Philip Klein in 1985 with information that was uncovered during the restoration of the Centre Furnace Mansion in the early 1980s.
