JOIN & SUPPORT
Your membership in 2020 was absolutely critical to keeping our Society alive and well in a year none of us could anticipate. We are so grateful for your interest and support!
Like many local non-profits, we experienced extreme challenges in 2020. The pandemic forced us to close the Centre Furnace Mansion—the Birthplace of Penn State—and the 19th century Boogersburg School, where our docents offer “day in the life” educational history programs to hundreds of area school children every year. Then dealt with a surprisingly expensive break in the Mansion’s water line. We also canceled our in-person programs, presentations, workshops, and fundraising events. But our members didn’t cancel us. In fact, they generously increased their support, sustaining the society so that we are in good position to resume and expand our live programming as soon as it is safe to do so.
In the meantime, we have pivoted to virtual programming. This fall we featured presentations on the history of Beaver Stadium, Philipsburg’s historic Rowland Theater, local newspaper competition in the 1970s, and 25 Years of First Night. Events such as our annual plant sale, Music Under the Sycamore, and Stocking Stuffer/Holiday Market also took place virtually.
This year we will unveil our new online Centre County History Encyclopedia and in late spring begin the restoration of the Mansion’s roof and porches. As we prepare for life after COVID, you can strengthen our society by renewing your membership for 2021. Membership is just $35 for individuals and $50 for families.
With your support, we can keep Centre County’s amazing history alive, expansive, inclusive and accessible to our entire community.
