CCHS Hosted “History: It’s Everyone’s Business”
CBICC Business After Hours at the Centre Furnace Mansion
August 8, 2013

The Centre County Historical Society extends its special thanks to our sponsors, partners and individuals who contributed to the Business After Hours event on August 8!  CCHS remains a vital organization due to the collaborations and support that we receive from local businesses, organizations and scores of individuals who donate and contribute their time and resources.

The evening of August 8 was filled with activities and refreshments to showcase the Centre Furnace Mansion and its gardens and grounds along with a representation of CCHS programming and collaborations.  (Click on the photos to the left to enlarge, or visit our Facebook page for more images!)  Todd Miner from Vamos!, assisted with transporting guests from their vehicles to the festivities highlighting an interesting new service while the Ladies of Battery B re-enactors in period apparel were on hand to welcome visitors to the 19th Century and explain the various components of period clothing.

Guests were invited to take tours of the Mansion and were treated to period music by a trio from the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra in one of the Mansion’s parlors. Historic CBICC materials on display were provided by the CBICC and the CCHS exhibit interpreting the archaeology of the Benner Commerce Park, Building on the Past included artifacts found that were connected to the 19th century Valentine Ore Washer site.

Richard Pencek and Tammi Puskar helped apprentices from CBICC learn to make pegs for building the old fashioned way with a 19th Century Pennsylvania German “schnitzelbank” at Jackie’s Joinery 19th century tool exhibit.

David Lembeck guided visitors through the exhibit A Common Canvas, Pennsylvania’s New Deal Post Office Murals based on the research and documentation project by David Lembeck and photographer Michael Mutmansky featuring images of artwork that was created for Pennsylvania post offices during Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal initiative between 1934 and 1943.

Penn States’ Club Croquet instructed and assisted players in a full and half-court games of croquet.

Activities along with great refreshments donated by Otto’s Pub and Brewery, Happy Valley Winery, Harrison’s Wine Grill & Catering, and CCHS and beautiful floral arrangements by Avànt Garden made for a lovely evening of 19th Century atmosphere of the Centre Furnace Mansion. Our sincere gratitude to all who helped make this evening a success.
